Lean operations are based on the elimination of various types of waste generating inefficiencies, excess of stock and poor quality. In assembly-based industry, they often require the redesign of manufacturing lines, transforming them into – for example – U-shaped “cells” hosting one or two workers making a complete part, the so-called “one-piece flow”.

The shop-floor management in a lean environment is "visual", based on extensive use of “kanban”, component racks where part needs are made evident through color tabs and can be refilled in real time. The kanban practice, associated with simple operational measurement graphs placed at each spot ensure that the activity is controlled step by step by the workers, rather than by a computer.
